Space Marines in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000
Few warriors, sacred armour, and a campaign that lives in orbit.
Space Marines are the elite launch race in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. Creative Assembly has shown them as a small, expensive, heavily armoured force that wins by placing the right models in the right ruin, not by filling the map. If you are coming from Total War: WARHAMMER III, do not treat a Captain like a legendary lord with a health bar the size of a dragon. Treat a Strike Force like a scalpel you drop from orbit and pull back before it is surrounded.
This page is the Adeptus Astartes as confirmed on stage: Ultramarines as a lore chapter, a second unnamed chapter at launch, power armour, Razorbacks, Dreadnoughts, Librarians, Terminators, orbital Strike Forces, and fleet upgrades in the void. We will not invent a third Chapter, a Land Raider, or a named primarch because a codex has them. Pair this primer with the Space Marines campaign start and a skeleton from Space Marines builds.
What Creative Assembly has actually shown
The Gamescom 2026 tutorial slice is still the cleanest Space Marine lesson. A four-unit Strike Force hunts a crashed ship while an Ork host fields far more bodies. The Astartes do not auto-win because they wear power armour. They win if you refuse bad melee, use cover, and spend army-level tools when the green tide clumps. Hands-on reports (Inven, citing Attila Mohacsi) put Intercessors at about ten models, Aggressors and Terminators at about six, and Captains or Librarians at about five including staff. Those are preview counts, not a codex. Losing one Marine or a Dreadnought should hurt. Space Marines are virtually unbreakable: a beaten squad makes a tactical withdrawal rather than a panic flee. That is morale, not a health-bar cheat. Practise it on the Space Marines start. Alpha Strike footage later showed mixed wargear inside squads, heroes with customisable bodyguards rather than immortal wanderers, and the same cover-and-sightline language the Astra Militarum gunline uses — just with fewer models that hit much harder.
Confirmed battlefield pieces so far:
- Power armour infantry — the core of every list CA has dropped. Few wounds on the map, high durability per model.
- Razorbacks — armoured transport and fire support, not a flavour truck.
- Dreadnoughts — walker weight that answers Ork Deff Dreads without pretending you have a Stompa.
- Librarians — psychic support. Do not play them like a Total War caster lord who solos a blob.
- Terminators — elite shock infantry for the ugly rooms and the last push.
- Orbital Strike Force posture — the army arrives from the fleet, not from a barracks you painted on the dirt.
If a unit is missing from that list, it is missing because CA has not shown it in this game. The closed beta later in 2026 and the 2027 release will expand the roster inside one title, the way director Attila Mohacsi has framed the whole project.
Campaign: upgrade the fleet, drop the scalpel
Space Marine campaign identity is orbital. On the galactic map you move void fleets between systems, then drop a Strike Force onto a contested planet. Creative Assembly has contrasted that loop with Orks, who industrialise the worlds they hold. Marines upgrade in orbit. That is the economy fact we have; we will not invent extra resources CA has not named.
Planets still matter. Governors have personalities. Orbital bombardment and world-destroying weapons exist as confirmed toys, not as the default click every turn. A Space Marine crusade is still a crusade: you chain system campaigns into crusade theaters that can run past 600 turns on the road to Armageddon. The difference is where your power lives. If you park the fleet and try to play Guard on the ground, you are fighting the faction, not the opponent.
The Era Indomitus setting and the Yarrick–Ghazghkull Armageddon story sit in the background even when you are not commanding Cadians. Space Marines are the Imperial scalpel on that road, not the gunline and not the mob.
Sub-factions, custom warlords, and what is not at launch
Each launch race gets two lore sub-factions. Ultramarines are the named Space Marine chapter. CA has said a second chapter ships at launch without putting a second name on the same slide. Do not assume Black Templars, Blood Angels, or Space Wolves until they are shown.
Customisation is a launch pillar. You can field a custom warlord with colours, heraldry, and traits, then mix wargear inside units the way Alpha Strike demonstrated. Traitor Guard is a Guard reskin, not a Marine heretic legion. Chaos Space Marines are explicitly post-launch, not a fifth button on day one.
David Harbour appeared in a mysterious role at The Game Awards on 11 December 2025. That is not confirmation that he voices a Chapter Master, a Librarian, or anyone else on this page.
How to play them in battle
- Count models before you count unit cards. Four Space Marine units is not four Empire infantry blobs.
- Read ruins and firing lanes first. Power armour does not make you immune to a Stompa that sees you in the open.
- Keep the Librarian and the warlord inside bodyguards. Heroes are not immortal individuals.
- Use the Razorback to relocate, not to ram a Meganob mob for fun.
- Spend orbital and army abilities when the enemy clumps, not when you feel dramatic.
- Disengage. A Strike Force that stays too long becomes a relic.
Practise that list on the Space Marines start page, then steal a skeleton from Space Marines builds. If you want the opposite fantasy — more bodies, more tanks, more dirt — read the Astra Militarum page and fight the same Ork problem from the other side of the river.
Who should main Space Marines
Main them if you like elite few, sacred armour, and a campaign that lives in the void. Skip them if you want to paint twenty infantry cards and never think about ammo lanes. Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is a 2027 release with a closed beta later in 2026; this page will grow when CA shows the second chapter by name. Until then, play the scalpel you have been shown, not the Codex you own on the shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.
Which Space Marine chapter is confirmed in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?
Ultramarines are the named lore chapter. Creative Assembly has said a second chapter ships at launch but has not put a second name on the same public slide.
How do Space Marines play on the campaign map?
They upgrade fleets in orbit and drop Strike Forces onto planets. That is the opposite of Orks, who industrialise the worlds they hold.
What Space Marine units have been shown?
Power armour infantry, Razorbacks, Dreadnoughts, Librarians, Terminators, and orbital Strike Forces. We do not list units CA has not put on screen.
Can I create a custom Chapter?
Launch includes a custom warlord with colours, heraldry, and traits, plus mixed wargear. That is army customisation, not a promise of every successor Chapter as a lore sub-faction.
Are Chaos Space Marines a Space Marine sub-faction at launch?
No. Chaos Space Marines are post-launch. Traitor Guard is a custom reskin of Astra Militarum, not a Marine legion.
