Crusade Theaters in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000
Nested wars: planet, system, theater — a crusade that can run past 600 turns.
Crusade theaters are the chaining layer of Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. Game director Attila Mohacsi has described the campaign as nested: on one planet you recruit, build, and fight much as Total War always has; those planetary wars chain into a star-system campaign; those systems chain into a theater that can run past 600 turns. The named destination of that nesting is Armageddon in the Era Indomitus. This is not a single continent with a bigger turn counter. It is how Creative Assembly intends a galactic sandbox to become a mega campaign without asking you to micro every hive in the galaxy at once.
This page is the nesting as stated, not a leaked theater picker with named sectors we have not been given. Read it with the campaign hub, the galactic map of planets and fleets, and the road to Armageddon. Then pick a race on the faction hub, because orbit versus dirt versus gunline versus hit-and-run changes how a theater feels long before the turn counter hits 600.
Planet, then system, then theater
Layer one is the planet. Hands-on footage already showed the scale of a planetary fight: a four-unit Space Marine Strike Force on a crash site, a Guard gunline on a river, Ork mobs that industrialise the dirt they take. Governors have personalities so worlds are not identical. Orbital bombardment and world-destroying weapons exist as confirmed toys. Finishing a planet is a campaign beat, not the credits.
Layer two is the star system. Several planets, a fleet problem, a reason to leave a world you already painted. CA has not published a list of system names beyond the Armageddon destination and the public battles. We will not invent a Segmentum map. The point of the layer is mechanical: you cannot treat every rock as the only war, and you cannot hide in one hive while the rest of the system industrialises under a WAAAGH!.
Layer three is the crusade theater. Systems glued together into a war that can run past 600 turns. That number is Mohacsi’s public scale, not a promise that your first save is a year of real time, and not a threat that you must play 600 turns before the game lets you see Armageddon. It is the size of the box they are building — large enough that a Total War campaign can be a crusade, small enough that the studio can expand the same game for years instead of shipping WARHAMMER 40,000 II.
Why nesting instead of one giant map
Creative Assembly built a new engine because guns, cover, and stars would not fit the fantasy trilogy. Nesting is the campaign half of that sentence. A single starmap with every planet fully simulated would be unplayable. A single planet would betray the 40k pitch they sold at The Game Awards on 11 December 2025, with David Harbour in a mysterious role: you do not fight on one world. You fight across many, then drop into colossal real-time battles.
Theaters are the compromise that still feels like 40k. Yarrick’s Skulls 2026 broadcast talked about hives, regions, continents, a planet, an entire subsector, a theatre of endless war. That language maps onto the nesting. A hive is a battle. A planet is a mini-campaign. A subsector is a system layer. A theatre of endless war is this page. The closed beta later in 2026 is where that compromise will be stress-tested. The 2027 release is where it has to ship as one game, not as a numbered sequel already planned.
Faction posture across a long theater
Six hundred turns is long enough for the two named economies to matter. Space Marines upgrade fleets in orbit and drop Strike Forces; a theater for them is a fleet schedule and a sequence of scalpels, not a settlement-spam. Orks industrialise planets they hold; a theater for them is a factory chain and a WAAAGH! that wants every rock. Astra Militarum lives on gunlines and tanks — Cadians, Kasrkin, Ogryns, Commissars, Leman Russ, Rogal Dorn, Baneblade, Sentinels — and still has to move between stars even if the fantasy is dirt. Aeldari have had the least footage; assume a different tempo in the same nesting, not a Webway CA has not shown.
Custom warlords exist at launch so your face can last a 600-turn save. Two lore sub-factions per race exist so Ultramarines, Cadians, and Bad Moons are not the only paint. Traitor Guard is a reskin if you want the gunline heretical for the whole theater. Chaos Space Marines are post-launch content for a later expansion of the same game, which is exactly Mohacsi’s pitch.
How to play a theater without burning out or planet-killing it
- Finish planets on purpose. A half-held hive behind you is a governor problem and an Ork factory problem.
- Move the fleet when the system is the war. Marines especially. A parked fleet is a Strike Force you never drop.
- Treat bombardment and world-killing weapons as scarce. A theater of endless war dies if every system is an apocalypse click.
- Pick Armageddon as destination, not as skip. The nested road is the content.
- Learn the firefight in how to play so a 600-turn save is not 600 menu reloads after bounced battles.
- Expect the game to grow. Mohacsi has said this is a single title expanded for years. Your first theater is the start of that promise, not the last map in the box.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is still in development. This page will gain named theaters when CA names them. Until then, chain the wars you have been shown: planet, system, crusade, and a subsector that bleeds if you stop marching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.
What is a crusade theater in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?
The top nesting layer: planetary wars chain into system campaigns, which chain into a theater that can run past 600 turns toward Armageddon.
Do I have to play 600 turns?
No. 600-plus turns is the scale Mohacsi has used for mega campaigns, not a mandatory timer before you are allowed to see the Armageddon system.
Is a theater the same as the galactic map?
The galactic map is planets, fleets, governors, and bombardment. A theater is how those system campaigns are chained into one crusade. Read both pages.
Will Creative Assembly make a numbered sequel instead?
Director Attila Mohacsi has described a single game expanded for years rather than numbered sequels. Chaos Space Marines are the post-launch race already placed on that plan.
Which faction is best for a long theater?
Marines if you want orbital scheduling, Orks if you want industrialised planets, Guard if you want gunlines on every rock, Aeldari if you accept less preview information. The nesting is the same; the posture is not.
