Space Marines Builds in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000

This is a pre-release army skeleton for Space Marines in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000, not a live patch meta. Creative Assembly has shown Adeptus Astartes as a small, high-power Strike Force that drops from orbit, fights with mixed weapons, and upgrades on the void side of the galactic map rather than by industrialising dirt. Ultramarines are the confirmed lore chapter on stage. A second chapter ships at launch; this wiki will not invent its name, colours, or unique relics until CA does.

Read the builds hub first so you understand why none of these pages publish fake points. Then compare the preview tier list and the Space Marines faction page before you treat a Librarian like a Total War: WARHAMMER III legendary lord. He is not one.

What CA has actually shown

Gamescom 2026 footage opened a tutorial slice with roughly four small Marine units hunting a crashed ship while an Ork host fielded far more bodies. That is the teaching beat. Elites do not auto-win because they wear sacred armour. They win if they refuse bad melee, keep models in cover, and spend army abilities — reserves and bombardment — at the moment the enemy blobs.

Hands-on and Alpha Strike coverage also established habits that belong on every Adeptus Astartes list:

  • Mixed weapons inside a unit, so target priority is per model and per gun, not “click the card and forget”.
  • Heroes with customisable bodyguards instead of immortal individuals wandering the street.
  • Sentry mode so a gunline does not chase bait out of a ruin.
  • Strafing and reversing armour, with accuracy penalties, when a tank is on the table.
  • Unlimited simulated ammunition in the builds shown; suppression and sightlines still decide the fight.

We do not attach invented ballistic skill charts or wound tables to those systems. The skeleton is about posture, not a leaked datasheet.

Preview Strike Force skeleton

Think in roles, not in a fake 2,000-point roster.

  1. Warlord core — a custom warlord or named commander with a bodyguard. Name, paint, and trait him; do not send him on a solo hero dive. Each launch race gets two lore sub-factions plus this custom option. Ultramarines are the named chapter we can lock today.
  2. Battleline of the few — a handful of infantry units, not a Guard wave. Their job is to hold ruins and fire lanes, not to fill the map. If you spread them like Cadian infantry, you will be eaten by mobs.
  3. Precision guns — keep at least one element that can punish light vehicles and clustered infantry without leaving cover. Mixed wargear exists so one squad can split fire when geometry allows.
  4. A shock piece, not a second army — if the preview build in front of you has a walker or a transport, treat it as a scalpel. Marines are not Orks; they do not win by parking a Stompa on the objective and laughing.
  5. Army tools — strategic reserves and bombardment are list-level buttons. Hold them until the WAAAGH! clumps or a Guard blob leaves the riverbank.

That is the entire preview list. If a YouTuber is already filling slots with unconfirmed chapters, specific relic weapons CA has not named, or Chaos allies, they are writing fan fiction. Chaos Space Marines are post-launch. Traitor Guard is a custom Guard reskin, not a Marine ally slot.

How the skeleton plays in battle

Start every map by reading cover. A ruined hab-block is not flavour; it is why a four-unit Strike Force can even exist against a green tide. Place infantry in ruins before the first move. Put the warlord inside the bodyguard, not on a decorative rock. Set sentry on the unit that should never chase. Strafe any armour away from Meganobz rather than reversing into a melee blob “because Marines are tough”.

Versus Astra Militarum, do not trade shot for shot in the open against a Baneblade and a Leman Russ line. Use reserves to appear on a flank after the tanks have committed their facing, then bombard the infantry that peels off to hunt you. Versus Orks, the how-to-play primer is blunt: overlapping fields of fire, refuse the WAAAGH! blob, never let Ghazghkull choose the street. Versus Aeldari, you have less public data than any other matchup. Assume they want to appear, delete a unit, and vanish. Sentry and cover matter more than a heroic charge.

Campaign posture is part of the build

Space Marines in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 upgrade fleets in orbit. That is not lore flavour; CA has contrasted it with Orks building on the ground. Your “list” on the crusade layer is a Strike Force you can afford to drop, not a planet-wide conscript wave. Crusade theaters chain toward Armageddon, where the studio has put Ultramarines-adjacent Imperial forces and the Yarrick–Ghazghkull rivalry on the poster. Do not rebuild this skeleton as if you were painting a static 10th-edition tournament army that never looks up at a void fleet.

The game launches on PC (Steam app 4199910 and Epic), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Full controller support is listed on Steam because this is the first mainline Total War designed for a pad. The Strike Force skeleton does not change on DualSense; the console controls page explains why button-level maps are not official yet. Japanese voice-over and the 18+ rating also do not add extra Marine units.

How to practise this list

Tick the army planner before you watch another trailer: cover, sentry, mixed weapons, bodyguard, reserves, bombardment. Register for the closed beta that opened sign-ups in June 2026. Wishlist from the wishlist tool. If you are still choosing a race, use the faction picker. When CA publishes real datasheets for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000, this page will stop being a skeleton and start being a patch log. Until then it stays labelled as preview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.

Is this Space Marines list a live Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 meta?

No. It is a pre-release skeleton based on shown Strike Force play. There are no official points or ranked stats yet.

Which chapter is confirmed?

Ultramarines are the confirmed lore chapter. A second chapter ships at launch; its name has not been treated as fact on this page.

Can I ally Chaos Space Marines at launch?

No. Creative Assembly has placed Chaos Space Marines after launch, not in the 2027 box as a fifth race or ally slot.

Why so few units in the skeleton?

Gamescom footage showed a small Strike Force against a much larger Ork host. The lesson is quality, cover, and army tools — not filling every deployment slot.

Do Marines ignore cover because they are elites?

No. Shown builds still live and die on ruins, sightlines, sentry mode, and bodyguards. Power armour is not a skip-cover button.
