Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Preview Review

This is a preview review of Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000, not a scored verdict on a finished 2027 box. Creative Assembly, SEGA, and Games Workshop announced the game at The Game Awards 2025. Subsequent beats — the PC Gaming Show, the Alpha Strike stream, and Eurogamer’s Gamescom 2026 hands-on — are the entire evidence pile. There is no review embargo for a gold master. There is no Metacritic number to invent. If you need a 9.4, you are in the wrong decade.

What follows is a balanced reading of what those showcases proved, what they implied, and what they still owe the player before launch.

What the announce actually sold

The TGA 2025 trailer sold scale and license: a Total War in the 41st Millennium, not a reskin of WARHAMMER III with bolters glued on. CA has been explicit that sci-fi gun density forced Warcore, a new engine rather than a fantasy-trilogy reskin. The campaign is galactic rather than continental. Launch races are Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari, each with two lore sub-factions and a custom warlord. Chaos Space Marines are later. Platforms are PC (Steam app 4199910 and Epic), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. It is the first mainline Total War with full controller support advertised as a first-class pad game, the first Total War with full Japanese voice-over, and Creative Assembly’s first 18+ title.

That is an unusually clean pitch. It is also still a pitch. A trailer cannot prove whether sentry mode feels good after forty hours, whether Aeldari have a roster, or whether a 600-turn-scale crusade toward Armageddon is fun or homework.

What Warcore, Alpha Strike, and Gamescom actually showed

The Alpha Strike coverage and Gamescom 2026 hands-on are the first times the new combat language became specific. PC Gamer named the game Best PC Game at Gamescom 2026 on 30 August. That is booth heat, not a score on this page. Cover and sightlines replace the fantasy melee blob. Mixed weapons live inside one card. Per-model line of fire lets a squad shoot two targets. Tanks strafe and reverse while firing, with accuracy penalties. Sentry mode stops a gunline chasing bait. Unlimited simulated ammunition appeared in the builds shown — suppression and geometry still decide the fight. Heroes bring bodyguards. Reserves and bombardment sit at army level.

Eurogamer’s session put Guard on a river against Orks and Marines on a crash site with roughly four small units. That pair of lessons is the best thing CA has done in public: elites do not auto-win, hordes do not auto-win, and a Baneblade or a Stompa is a super-heavy with a job, not a win button. Notebookcheck and IGN both named Warcore and the Havok-backed destructible terrain: cluster bombs throw ragdolls, trucks flatten light cover, a Stompa walks through a building. Read destructible cover. Attila Mohacsi told Inven Global that Space Marines are virtually unbreakable and that a beaten squad makes a tactical withdrawal rather than a panic flee — see morale. Yarrick versus Ghazghkull is the story poster. Ultramarines, Cadians, and Bad Moons are the named identities we can lock. Aeldari remain the least-shown launch race, which is the preview tier list’s entire point.

On the strategy layer, Marines upgrade fleets in orbit and Orks industrialise dirt on the galactic map. Governors have personalities. Orbital bombardment and world-killing weapons are confirmed toys, not the default click. That split is more interesting than a third reskinned province map. It is also unproven at crusade length.

Where the preview is still thin

Aeldari need a battle as clear as the Cadian river. The second Marine chapter and the second Ork clan need names before list-building culture starts inventing them. A full keymap does not exist; see controls. Steam’s system requirements currently print only Windows 10 64-bit minimum and Windows 11 recommended. Traitor Guard as a custom reskin is a flavour footnote, not a fifth race. Chaos as “later” is a promise with no date. Closed beta sign-ups opened in June 2026; play is later in 2026; invitations are selective. Until someone can fail the same mission twice, every glowing hands-on is a studio-guided slice.

The 18+ rating and Japanese VO are real differentiators. They do not prove the UI will survive a pad in a living room, or that bombardment will stay fun instead of becoming a skip-combat button. CA has said this is a single game they will expand for years, the way they wish they could have treated the fantasy trilogy. That is either the best Total War plan in a decade or a live-service sentence with extra steps. We will not pretend to know which.

Who this preview is for

If you loved WARHAMMER III’s campaign but hated melee blobs, the gun engine looks like the right sequel. If you loved painting Ultramarines and want a four-unit Strike Force in ruins, Gamescom spoke to you. If you want a finished Aeldari codex, a ranked ladder, or a scored review, wait. Use the faction picker, the army planner, and the wishlist and beta tool. Read how to play and the builds as skeletons.

Verdict (preview, not a score)

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 looks like the most coherent new Total War direction since the fantasy trilogy started, with the honest caveat that one launch race is still a silhouette and the campaign length is still a slide in a roundtable. Wishlist it. Register for the beta. Do not buy a PC from a fake spec. Do not quote this page as a 9/10. Come back when 2027 is a date instead of a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.

Is this a scored review of Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?

No. It is a preview reading of TGA 2025, Alpha Strike, the PC Gaming Show, and Gamescom 2026. The game has not shipped.

What did Gamescom 2026 prove?

That Guard gunlines and Marine Strike Forces can both work if they use cover, and that Ork numbers do not auto-win against sentry and bombardment.

What is still unproven?

Aeldari as a playable roster at Cadian clarity, crusade length, pad UI over a full campaign, and any keymap or system-requirement sheet beyond Steam’s OS lines.

Should I wait for the closed beta?

Yes if you want hands-on. Sign-ups opened June 2026; testing is planned later in 2026. Invitations are selective.

Is Chaos in the review because it is a launch race?

No. Chaos Space Marines are explicitly later. The preview only grades what CA has put on stage.
