Astra Militarum in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000
Cadian gunlines, super-heavy tanks, and the Old Man who will make Ghazghkull pay.
Astra Militarum is the Imperial gunline in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. Creative Assembly has shown them as the race that holds a river, a ruin, and a continent with overlapping fields of fire rather than a handful of demigods. If Space Marines are a scalpel dropped from orbit, Guard is the army that stays on the dirt and makes the dirt expensive. Cadians are the confirmed lore sub-faction. Commissar Yarrick is the confirmed Guard face of the Armageddon story, set against Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka in the Era Indomitus.
This page lists what has been put on screen: Cadian Shock Troops, Kasrkin, Ogryns, Commissars, Sentinels, Leman Russ, Rogal Dorn, and the Baneblade. We will not invent a Death Korps trench or a named tank ace because a codex has them. Steal a skeleton from Astra Militarum builds, then learn why dakka beats a charge in ranged combat and how to beat Orks.
What the previews actually showed
Gamescom 2026 and Bilibili World hands-on sessions put Guard on a river crossing against Orks. That is still the teaching battle. You win it with cover, sentry mode, mixed models inside a single unit card, and tanks that can strafe and reverse while firing — with accuracy penalties if you drive and shoot like a maniac. PC Gamer’s Alpha Strike notes remain the public checklist: line of fire is per model, ammo was unlimited in the builds shown, suppression still matters, and a Commissar, a vox, or a different gun can hide inside a blob you used to treat as one statistic.
Confirmed tools so far:
- Cadian Shock Troops — the named infantry of the confirmed lore sub-faction. They live in ruins, not in a parade square.
- Kasrkin — elite Guard, not Space Marines with a cheaper paint job. Use them as the knife, not the whole line.
- Ogryns — the melee answer CA has actually shown, for the moment a WAAAGH! reaches the gunline.
- Commissars — discipline and leadership inside mixed units, not immortal legendary lords.
- Sentinels — walkers for flanks and sightlines the battle tanks should not waste.
- Leman Russ and Rogal Dorn — the main battle tanks of the lists on stage.
- Baneblade — the super-heavy. Keep it on overlapping fire, not an isolated flank.
A ruined hab-block is not flavour. It is the difference between a surviving infantry unit and a pink mist. Read ranged combat before you copy a YouTuber who still thinks cavalry charges win 40k Total War.
Campaign: the dirt army on the road to Armageddon
Guard campaign identity sits between the two poles Creative Assembly has named. Space Marines upgrade fleets in orbit. Orks industrialise planets they take. Astra Militarum lives on the ground with a gunline economy we will not invent extra resources for. Governors still have personalities. Orbital bombardment and world-killing weapons are confirmed toys for the crusade, not the default click.
Narratively, this is Yarrick’s war. The Skulls 2026 teaser put the Old Man on the line: Orks swarm the hives, the planet and the subsector bleed, there will be no retreat, and this Old Man will make Ghazghkull pay for every bloody step taken upon Armageddon. The Emperor demands it. He demands it. Play Guard if you want that story from the Imperial side of the river.
Crusade theaters still chain system campaigns toward that destination. A 600-turn-scale mega campaign does not become a single continent because you picked Cadians. You still move between planets. You still fail if you let an Ork world industrialise next door while you admire a Baneblade in a parade.
Sub-factions, Traitor Guard, and custom warlords
Each launch race gets two lore sub-factions. Cadians are the named Guard one. CA has not put a second regiment name on the same public slide; do not assume Catachan, Krieg, or Valhalla until they are shown.
Custom warlords are a launch pillar for Guard as for everyone else: name, paint, traits, mixed wargear. Traitor Guard currently exist as a custom reskin of Astra Militarum, not as a fifth launch race and not as Chaos Space Marines. If you want a heretic gunline on day one, that reskin is the honest option. Chaos Space Marines remain post-launch.
David Harbour’s mysterious Game Awards role from 11 December 2025 is still not a confirmation that he is Yarrick. The Old Man on the Skulls teaser is Yarrick; the Hollywood credit is separate until CA says otherwise.
How to hold the line
- Place the gunline in cover before the first Ork mob moves. Sentry mode exists so you do not chase bait out of the ruin.
- Overlap Leman Russ, Rogal Dorn, and Baneblade arcs. A lone super-heavy on a flank is a trophy.
- Keep Commissars and warlords inside bodyguards. Mixed models mean target priority is no longer “click the card”.
- Spend Ogryns when the WAAAGH! reaches you, not at the deployment line for a highlight reel.
- Use Kasrkin and Sentinels to fix problems the main line should not leave cover to solve.
- Bombardment and reserves are army tools. Use them when the Ork blob clumps, which is what how to beat Orks is for.
Practise that loop, then lock a list from Astra Militarum builds. Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is a 2027 release with a closed beta later in 2026. This gunline will grow inside one game, not a numbered sequel, the way Attila Mohacsi has described the whole project.
Who should main Astra Militarum
Main Guard if you want tanks, overlapping fire, Cadian discipline, and Yarrick’s side of Armageddon. Skip them if you only want twelve models on the map or a psychic hit-and-run you have not seen enough of yet. The river crossing is the tutorial. The rest of the galaxy is the exam.
