How to Beat Orks in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000
Do not blob. Suppress the WAAAGH! before the choppas arrive. The river crossing is the textbook.
Every public battle Creative Assembly has shown for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 eventually becomes the same problem: an Ork host wants to close, and someone with a gunline has to make that walk expensive. IGN’s cut of the Bilibili World 2026 footage is the cleanest narrative version. The Alpha Strike livestream later ran the same encounter as a playable river crossing. Both sessions put Astra Militarum on defence against an Ork invasion in the Armageddon theatre. This page is the matchup tutorial those demos were teaching, not a ranked 2027 meta.
Read ranged combat first if the words sentry, suppression, and per-entity line of fire still feel abstract. Then steal a skeleton list from the Astra Militarum builds hub so you are not inventing a regiment CA has not shown.
What the Bilibili and Alpha Strike battles actually showed
The setup is a civilised world in the Armageddon theatre. An Ork invasion is already on the dirt. A Guard regiment is trying not to lose the city, because losing the city loses the planet and the economy that comes with it. In the Bilibili narration, a fleet labelled Deff Makerz is sending more bodies down, and the Imperial capital ship can spend orbital bombardment before the drop. That is the campaign language: soften, then hold.
On the ground the Guard cannot win a continuous scrum. The narrator says it outright — you will not match Ork strength in close combat, so you use tactics. Scout Sentinels push a flank because they are fast and see far. They can be tooled with autocannons, heavy flamers, or missile launchers. A small detachment hides behind a supply train and waits to split the WAAAGH! when it commits. The rest of the regiment occupies ruins, barricades, and upper storeys so the first volley happens before the first choppa.
Alpha Strike then played that crossing from the chair. Same river, same lesson, more UI: mixed models, sentry marks, reserves, and a Baneblade walking fire down a street of boyz.
Know the green tools before you counter them
Orks in the shown builds are not one blob with a different hat. The public roster already includes:
- Mobs of boyz — the tide. They want a short walk into your front rank. If they arrive unsuppressed, your gunline becomes a melee you did not pick.
- Meganobz — elite crushers. They eat unfocused small-arms and punish a line that never brought krak, meltas, or tank guns.
- Deff Dreads — walkers that turn a street into a problem. Per-entity sight means you can dedicate anti-armour barrels while the rest of the squad still shoots the mob.
- Stompa — the super-heavy you do not 1v1 with a hero. Treat it as an army-level problem: overlapping tank fire, bombardment, and refusing to feed it a clump.
- Ghazghkull — the named face of the Armageddon story opposite Yarrick. A warlord with a WAAAGH! behind him is a timing attack, not a lord you duel in the open.
Stormboyz, kombi-skorchas, power klaws, and killsaws showed up in the same footage as supporting spice. Do not pretend the 2027 codex is locked. Do pretend that anything with a jet pack or a flame template exists to punish a gunline that sat in a neat rectangle.
Know the Guard tools that actually answer
The demos were Cadian-flavoured defence, not a theorycraft tournament. What CA put on the table:
- Cadians — the mass. They live in cover and die in the open. Mixed Commissar and vox models inside the card are why orders and morale are not a separate minigame.
- Kasrkin — the elite infantry that can hold a ruin you actually care about.
- Ogryns — the melee insurance and the cover problem. They can stop a breakthrough. They also trash barricades the lasguns still need, so do not send them through your own wall unless the wall is already lost.
- Leman Russ and Rogal Dorn — the moving guns. Strafe and reverse with an accuracy penalty; do not snipe on the sprint.
- Baneblade — sweeping fire for blobs, not a sniper for a single Meganob.
- Sentinels — eyes and flanking guns. If you never scout, the WAAAGH! chooses the street.
- Commissars — bodyguards, not immortal solos. Keep them in the bubble.
Yarrick is the confirmed Guard face of the Armageddon plot. He is not a substitute for overlapping fields of fire.
The actual plan: overlap, suppress, refuse the blob
- Read the ruins before the first move. The river crossing is won in the deploy screen. Assign lanes. Put Sentinels where they can see the approach without being the first thing a Deff Dread punches.
- Do not blob. A single bombardment, a Stompa foot, or a skorcha template deletes a clump. Depth beats a single pretty line.
- Sentry the far bank. Mark the mobs you intend to kill first so the gunline does not chase bait out of cover. That is the ranged combat lesson applied to Orks.
- Suppress before melee. Slow the walk. A suppressed mob arrives in pieces. An unsuppressed mob arrives as a WAAAGH! and your front rank is already in the scrum, even if the back rank can still shoot.
- Overlap tank and infantry fire. Russes and Dorns cover the streets the infantry cannot see. The Baneblade walks its barrel across boyz, then the anti-tank barrels swap onto the Dread that thought the street was empty.
- Spend bombardment on the commit, not on the scouting party. The Bilibili ship fired to soften. Alpha Strike treated army abilities the same way. A wasted orbital on three Stormboyz is a gift to Ghazghkull.
- Refuse bad melee. Kasrkin and Ogryns exist so the line can trade when it must. Cadians exist so it does not have to. If the Orks reach you on their terms, you already lost the approach.
Cover is destructible. An Ork truck in the Gamescom Space Marine slice flattened a position by driving through it. Assume walkers and Stompas can do the same to a Guard ruin. Have a second building.
What this matchup is not
It is not “Guard always wins because guns.” CA has shown the opposite teaching beat twice: elites and gunlines lose when they stand in the open or feed a super-heavy. It is not a promise that every 10th-edition Ork datasheet is in the 2027 box. It is not a Ghazghkull skill-order guide; we do not have his card.
It is the first matchup because it is the battle CA has put on stage the most. Practise it, then read the Armageddon campaign page so you know why this planet is the story’s destination rather than a random desert.
Hold the ruins. Overlap the guns. Suppress the tide. Do not 1v1 a Stompa. That is how you beat Orks in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 with the information we actually have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.
Can Astra Militarum beat Orks in melee in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?
Not as a plan. The Bilibili narration says Guard cannot match Ork close combat. Use cover, suppression, and overlapping fire, and keep Ogryns as insurance rather than as the opener.
What units has CA shown for Orks so far?
Mobs, Meganobz, Deff Dreads, a Stompa, Ghazghkull, plus supporting tools such as Stormboyz and walkers. The 2027 roster is not locked.
Should I 1v1 a Stompa with a hero?
No. Treat a Stompa as an army-level problem: concentrated tank fire, bombardment, and refusing to feed it a blob.
Where was the textbook battle filmed?
A river-crossing defence in the Armageddon theatre, shown at Bilibili World 2026 and replayed in the July Alpha Strike ranged-combat stream.
Where do I get a Guard list?
Start with the Astra Militarum faction page, then the Astra Militarum builds hub. Do not copy a tabletop tournament list CA has not shown in engine.
