Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Console Controls

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is the first mainline Total War designed as a DualSense and Xbox-pad game, not a keyboard campaign with a cursor overlay bolted on after launch. Steam lists app 4199910 with full controller support. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series are launch platforms beside PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. That sentence is a support claim. It is not a button map.

Creative Assembly has not published a complete DualSense or Xbox chart for cover, sentry, strafe, mixed-weapon targeting, or bombardment. This page will not invent Circle-for-sentry or RB-for-pause and then label the guess official. It explains what pad support actually means, which jobs a commander still has to issue, and how to practise those jobs before a screenshot of the radial menu exists.

Split from here to PC keybinds if you play mouse. The controls hub holds both. The orders themselves live in ranged combat and the army planner.

What “full controller support” actually confirms

Steam’s controller flag means CA and SEGA intend you to finish a crusade without a keyboard. That is new for a mainline Total War. Historical titles treated pads as a compromise. This one ships on PS5 and Xbox Series as a first-class SKU, with the same four launch factions, custom warlord, cover-and-guns battles, and new engine as the PC build. Chaos Space Marines remain post-launch on every platform, not a pad exclusive.

What the flag does not confirm:

  • Which face button occupies a ruin.
  • Whether sentry is a hold, a toggle, or a command-card pip.
  • Whether the right stick strafes a Leman Russ or only rotates the camera.
  • Whether DualSense adaptive triggers do anything with bolters.
  • Whether Xbox impulse triggers rumble on a Baneblade sweep.
  • A shared radial that looks like a console RTS from another studio.

If a previewer at Gamescom 2026 or Bilibili World played on a pad, that still is not a published overlay. Eurogamer’s hands-on and Cody Bonds’ demo described the fight — gunlines, cover, Ork blobs — not a button legend. Until CA prints a chart, treat every specific glyph on a fan wiki as fiction.

Why a pad Total War has to change the language

A mouse player drag-selects a street of Cadians, parks them in a ruin, sets sentry, and tab-targets Meganobz. A pad player has two sticks, a D-pad, four face buttons, two bumpers, two triggers, and maybe a touchpad. That is enough to command a 40k battle only if the UI collapses jobs into cards, radials, or contextual holds instead of a forest of F-keys.

The jobs do not shrink because the input shrank. You still need:

  1. Camera that can rise above a hab-block and look down a firing lane.
  2. Selection that can grab a Strike Force of four small units without grabbing the warlord’s bodyguard by accident.
  3. Cover that puts models into geometry.
  4. Sentry that stops a gunline chasing bait.
  5. Strafe and reverse on armour that fires on the move with accuracy penalties in shown builds.
  6. Pause so you are not playing an FPS with a thousand simulated projectiles.
  7. Army tools — reserves, bombardment, mixed-weapon stance — on a command card you can hit while frozen.

Those functions are shown in Alpha Strike and Gamescom 2026 footage. The mapping is not. How to play is the loop. This page is the warning not to wait for a leaked DualSense PNG.

DualSense versus Xbox: what we will not invent

Sony’s DualSense and Microsoft’s Xbox pad will both work. Steam already says so for the PC SKU; console SKUs exist because this is a mainline launch, not a port rumour. Adaptive triggers, haptic traces of a volley, and Xbox impulse rumble are platform features other shooters use. CA has not published a 40k implementation. We will not write “L2 squeezes a lasgun” and call it journalism.

Expect, as platform norms rather than confirmed checkboxes: a accessibility invert-Y, stick sensitivity, a pause that does not require a missing keyboard, and subtitles for the English and Japanese voice-over tracks. This is Creative Assembly’s first 18+ Total War; the rating does not change a bumper, but it does mean gore is in the default build you hold.

Last-generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not in the listed set. Series S versus Series X performance modes are unpublished. We will not invent a 30 fps S-cap or a Pro 120 Hz toggle. When Sony, Microsoft, or CA publish those modes, they belong here and on system requirements.

Campaign on a pad is a first-class problem

Battle is only half the loop. The strategy layer is a galactic sandbox: fleets, planets, governors, nested crusade theaters that can run past 600 turns on the road to Armageddon. A pad player has to end turn, recruit, move a fleet, and drop a Strike Force without a mouse cursor hunting tiny icons.

CA has not shown a complete campaign pad UI. Space Marines still upgrade in orbit. Orks still industrialise dirt. A custom warlord still exists at launch. None of that is DualSense-specific. It is a reminder that “full controller support” has to cover the galactic map, not only a river crossing against Orks.

If you are buying a PS5 or Series console for this game, you are in the announced audience. If you expected a keyboard overlay on the TV, you are playing the wrong series entry. Practise the orders. The glyphs can wait.

How to practise pad command before a chart exists

You can train the brain without a legend:

  • Watch an Alpha Strike or Gamescom battle and say the orders: cover, sentry, strafe, split fire, reserves, bombardment, bodyguard.
  • Pick a race with the faction picker so the jobs match a build — four Marine units is a different pad problem than a Guard gunline.
  • Tick the same jobs on the army planner.
  • Register for the closed beta (sign-ups June 2026, play later in 2026). A pad in a beta options menu is worth more than a Reddit overlay.
  • Wishlist PC, PS5, or Xbox from the wishlist tool. Steam still lists the date as TBA; the year around Gamescom is 2027.

When Creative Assembly prints DualSense and Xbox glyphs, this page will replace every “expectation” sentence with the screenshot. Until then, Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 console controls are a job list with full controller support, not a tattooed radial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.

Is Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox?

Yes. It is the first mainline Total War on DualSense and Xbox pads as well as PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steam lists full controller support.

Has Creative Assembly published the exact console buttons?

No. Exact DualSense and Xbox mappings for cover, sentry, strafe, and pause are not fully public. This page does not invent them.

Can I finish a crusade campaign on a pad?

Steam's full controller support claim means CA intends you to. A complete campaign radial has not been published. Practise the orders; wait for the UI screenshot.

Do DualSense adaptive triggers do something special?

CA has not published a 40k adaptive-trigger or Xbox impulse implementation. Platform rumble exists in other games; it is not a confirmed bolter recipe here.

Where are the PC keys?

See PC keybinds. That page is also honest: no official exclusive 40k letters, only series camera, groups, pause, and the new cover, sentry, and strafe needs.
