Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 PC Keybinds
No official 40k keymap yet. Series camera, groups, and pause — plus cover, sentry, and strafe.
Creative Assembly has not published a full keymap for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. This page will not invent exclusive 40k shortcuts, stamp them official, and then watch the closed beta prove the overlay wrong. It describes two layers of keyboard and mouse input: the camera, selection, control-group, and tactical-pause patterns every mainline Total War has trained for two decades, and the new orders a gun-density engine actually needs — cover, sentry mode, and armour that strafes.
If you want the pad version, read console controls. If you want the orders as a checklist rather than as keys, use the army planner. The controls hub is the short version of both. Players still learning the loop should start with how to play and ranged combat before arguing about unpublished F-keys.
What is confirmed, and what is a series habit
Steam lists app 4199910 with full controller support and a mouse-and-keyboard campaign on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Launch also includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. That is a platform claim. It is not a screenshot of the bindings menu.
What CA has shown in Alpha Strike, Gamescom 2026, and Eurogamer’s hands-on is the work: infantry occupying ruins, gunlines sitting in sentry, tanks firing while they slide, mixed-weapon cards, warlord bodyguards, reserves, and bombardment. None of those clips freeze on an overlay that says “press V for sentry.” Until a settings screenshot or a beta options menu exists, treat every specific letter on this page as a series expectation, labelled as such, not as a confirmed exclusive bind.
The 2027 release year and the closed beta — sign-ups from June 2026, play later in 2026 — are when a real chart is likely to appear. System requirements currently print only Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum OS and Windows 11 as recommended. That line is also not a keymap. Four launch factions, a custom warlord, Chaos later, cover and guns, and a new engine are the design facts. They do not print a letter on a keycap.
Expected camera (not a 40k exclusive)
If you have finished WARHAMMER III, Three Kingdoms, or Pharaoh, you already know the skeleton CA is extremely likely to keep:
- A free battle camera that rotates, zooms, and elevates so you can read a hab-block instead of staring at a blob.
- Edge-scroll and a keyboard camera plane, historically WASD or the arrow keys in this series.
- Drag-select, shift-add, and double-click-type selection on the unit cards.
- A minimap click that yanks the camera.
- Middle-mouse or Alt-style rotate, and a zoom wheel that is not also your weapon select.
Those are Total War habits. They are not an official Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 manual. If the beta ships a different default camera key, this page will replace the expectation with the screenshot. Do not tattoo WASD on your keyboard as if Creative Assembly mailed you a 40k overlay.
The camera matters more here than in a fantasy charge game. Cover and sightlines are the map. If you cannot get the lens above a ruin and along a street, you will walk Cadians into a Meganob without seeing the lane. Practise looking at geometry first. The bind can wait.
Control groups
Control groups are how a Cadian gunline, a tank lane, and a flanking squad stop being one panicked click. The series has used Ctrl+number to assign and the number keys to recall for a very long time. That pattern is an expectation, not a confirmed exclusive 40k shortcut.
What is confirmed as a design need: you will have more simultaneous jobs than a melee Total War. One card is not one gun. A Space Marine Strike Force is four small units, not a 160-model blob. A Baneblade that strafes is not the same group as the infantry that must stay in the ruin. If you cannot split those jobs, sentry mode will not save you.
Assign groups by job, not by lore. Group 1 holds. Group 2 tanks. Group 3 is the warlord plus bodyguard. Group 4 is the reserve you have not committed. That is a habit you can practise on the army planner and in a build before a single letter is official. Pick the race first with the faction picker so the groups match a real list.
Pause is not optional
Tactical pause, or a slow-time cousin, is a series expectation and a practical requirement for gun battles. A first-person shooter you can play without pause. A 40k Total War where every projectile is simulated, and where taking cover is an order, is not. Eurogamer’s Gamescom 2026 hands-on and the Alpha Strike streams both show fights that punish a late sentry toggle.
The exact PC key is not official. Historically the series has used P, space, or a pause function bound in the options menu. We will not crown one of those as the 40k pause key. We will say: find pause first when the beta opens, then issue cover and sentry while the world is frozen. If you try to play this like an FPS, the Orks will be in the ruin with you.
Campaign map camera, end-turn, and recruitment shortcuts will almost certainly exist as they have in every Creative Assembly sandbox. Those are also series expectations. Nested crusade theaters and the road to Armageddon do not change WASD. They change how long you live with the same muscle memory.
New orders the 40k engine needs
Preview battles added jobs a fantasy Total War player never bound in muscle memory. The functions are real. The keys are not.
- Take cover / occupy ruins. Hab-blocks and battlements are the map. You need an order that puts a blob into geometry, not adjacent to it. Ranged combat explains why. This page only asks: know that the order exists, and look for it in the unit card and the right-click menu before you invent a fan-made V-key.
- Sentry mode. Stops a gunline chasing bait. If you cannot find this toggle quickly, you will walk Cadians out of the ruin that kept them alive. Treat it as a hold-position cousin pointed at guns, not as a confirmed letter.
- Strafe and reverse on armour. Tanks fire while moving, with accuracy penalties in shown builds. Keyboard players will want a strafe plane that is not the same as camera rotate. Q and E have been camera or strafe in different Total Wars; we will not pick one and call it official. The need is: slide a Leman Russ off a street without turning the whole battlefield.
- Mixed-weapon targeting. One card is not one gun. You need a way to tell a blob to shoot Meganobz with krak and the mob with fragments. That is a UI job as much as a hotkey job.
- Bodyguard, reserves, bombardment. Army-level tools belong on a command card or a hotkey row you can hit while paused. Selecting the custom warlord should not yank the bodyguard off a lane.
Unlimited simulated ammunition in shown builds is not an input feature. Reload is not the bind you should be hunting for.
How to practise before a keymap exists
Watch a Gamescom or Alpha Strike battle and call the orders out loud: cover, sentry, strafe, split fire, reserves. Then lock a race and a build. Register for the closed beta if you want to be in the room when the real binds appear. Wishlist from the wishlist tool. When the beta client actually prints a bindings screen, this page will stop saying “expectation” and start saying “default.” Until Creative Assembly prints that chart, Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 PC keybinds stay a habit list. Do not download a fan overlay that pretends otherwise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.
Has Creative Assembly published official Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 PC keybinds?
No. This page describes expected series camera, control-group, and pause habits plus new 40k orders. It does not invent exclusive keys as confirmed.
Will WASD, Ctrl+number groups, and pause still exist?
Those are long-running Total War expectations and are extremely likely, but they are not a published 40k keymap. Wait for a settings screenshot or the closed beta options menu.
What new PC orders should I look for?
Cover or occupy-ruins, sentry mode, tank strafe and reverse, mixed-weapon targeting, warlord bodyguards, reserves, and bombardment. The functions are shown; the letters are not.
Should I download a fan-made 40k keymap overlay?
No. Any overlay that names exclusive F-keys as official is guessing. Practise the orders, then remap in the real client.
Where do I read about pad controls?
The console controls page covers DualSense and Xbox. Steam lists full controller support; exact buttons are not fully public either.
