Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Preview Tier List

This is a preview tier list for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000, not a ranked ladder and not a live-patch meta. Creative Assembly has not shipped a public multiplayer season. There are no official win rates, no dataslate points, and no tournament report to scrape. Every placement on this hub is an early read of what TGA 2025, Alpha Strike, the PC Gaming Show, and Gamescom 2026 actually put on screen — plus the honest admission of what they did not.

If you want army skeletons instead of letter grades, go to Builds. If you want race identity, go to Factions. If you want the split views this hub exists to introduce, open faction tiers and unit tiers.

Why a tier list exists before launch

Players will search for one whether we write it or not. The useful version is labelled. Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari are the four launch races. Each gets two lore sub-factions and a custom warlord. Chaos Space Marines are later. Traitor Guard is a custom Guard reskin, not a fifth race. Ultramarines, Cadians, and Bad Moons are the named identities we can lock. Yarrick and Ghazghkull headline the road to Armageddon. Cover, sightlines, mixed weapons, sentry mode, strafing, unlimited ammo in shown builds, bodyguards, reserves, and bombardment are the systems that actually decide whether a “tier” means anything.

A letter grade that ignores those systems is fan fiction. A letter grade that pretends Aeldari have the same footage depth as a Cadian river defence is also fan fiction.

Preview bands, not a ladder

Until a closed beta produces repeatable games, this wiki uses four bands:

  • Shown and central — tools CA keeps putting in the middle of battles: Cadian battleline, Ork mobs, Leman Russ lanes, Strike Force quality, Baneblade and Stompa as super-heavies.
  • Shown and specialised — Meganobz, Deff Dreads, Sentinels, Ogryns, Commissars, Marine bodyguards. Real, but not the whole army.
  • Mid / unknown — Aeldari as a race, plus any kit that has only been a silhouette. Least public data wins this band on purpose.
  • Not launch — Chaos Space Marines, and any ally slot nobody has confirmed.

That is the entire ranking philosophy. We will not publish S-tier percentages. We will not invent a win-rate for Ultramarines. We will not put a Phoenix Lord in S because a tabletop player expects one.

How to read the two child pages

Faction tiers compare the four launch races as campaign-and-battle packages: orbital Marines versus dirt-industry Orks, Guard gunlines versus Aeldari hit-and-run with an unknown sticker attached. Unit tiers compare the models CA has actually shown: battleline Cadians and mobs, super-heavy Baneblade and Stompa, and a long unknown column for craftworld kits.

Neither page is a shopping list for a 2027 tournament. Both pages will move when the closed beta — sign-ups from June 2026, play later in 2026 — produces something you can fail at twice.

What the hands-on actually implied

Gamescom 2026 showed Guard holding a river and Marines clearing a crash with four small units. That implies gunlines and elites can both work if they use cover. It does not imply Guard is S and Marines are A. Alpha Strike showed mixed weapons, sentry, strafing tanks, and unlimited simulated shots. That implies lists built around geometry beat lists built around a single charge. It does not imply a numbered modifier for sentry mode.

Ork mobs look terrifying until bombardment and overlapping fire exist. A Stompa looks unbeatable until you remember a Baneblade was shown as the Imperial answer. Aeldari look elegant in key art until you notice how rarely they have been playable on a stream. The preview Aeldari build is a playstyle skeleton for that reason.

Campaign is not a hidden fifth tier

Crusade theaters and the galactic map will change how strong a race feels over 600-turn-scale journeys without changing the tactical bands above. Marines upgrade in orbit. Orks industrialise planets. Guard and Aeldari sit between those poles. A race that is “worse” in a screenshot battle can still be the better crusade main if you like fleets, or dirt factories, or neither. Pick with the faction picker, then practise with the army planner.

Platforms — Steam app 4199910, Epic, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series — do not get separate tier lists. Full controller support is listed on Steam because this is the first mainline Total War on DualSense and Xbox pads; it does not buff Orks. Japanese VO and the 18+ rating do not buff Marines. Steam currently prints Windows 10 64-bit minimum and Windows 11 recommended, which also does not belong in a unit table.

How this list will die (on purpose)

The day Creative Assembly publishes datasheets or the closed beta has a stable patch, this preview language comes off. Until the 2027 launch of Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000, treat every letter, band, and table on this hub as a reading of footage — and read how to play if you came here looking for a cheat sheet that does not exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.

Is this Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 tier list a ranked ladder?

No. It is a preview ranking based on hands-on footage and official showcases. There is no public ladder or patch win-rate.

Which factions are ranked?

The four launch races: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari. Chaos Space Marines are marked not launch.

Why are Aeldari mid / unknown?

They have had the least public battle footage. Ranking them like a finished roster would be fiction.

Do you publish unit stats with these tiers?

No. Super-heavies like the Baneblade and Stompa are placed as shown roles, not as invented armour values.

When will this list become a real meta?

After a public or closed-beta patch produces repeatable games. Sign-ups opened June 2026; testing is planned later in 2026.
