Destructible Cover in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 does not treat cover as a forgotten percentage on a unit card. Creative Assembly unveiled the proprietary Warcore engine at the Total War 25th Anniversary in December 2025 so buildings, rubble, and sightlines could change in the middle of a firefight. Warcore replaces Warscape. It is console-ready. The physics half of that promise is Havok: dynamically destructible buildings, new paths punched through walls, and an AI that is supposed to exploit the terrain you just created. This page is that system as shown — not a damage table for every hab-block in the 2027 box.

If you still think of dakka as a fantasy archer volley, read ranged combat first. If the enemy is green and closing, pair this with how to beat Orks. The how to play primer covers the two-layer loop. The army planner is the tick-list version. Space Marines live and die on the corners described here. When those corners fail, morale is what happens next.

Why Warcore had to replace Warscape

Warscape was built for continents of cavalry and a melee blob that happened to include bows. Guns need geometry. A hab-block has to stop a round, then fail, then become something else. Creative Assembly has been blunt that the fantasy trilogy’s bones would not hold simulated projectiles, per-model lines of fire, and a map of stars. Warcore is the engine answer: a new proprietary stack, shown at the 25th Anniversary, aimed at PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series as well as PC. Destruction is not a cosmetics pack glued onto that stack. It is why the stack exists.

Havok Physics is the named partner. Buildings are dynamically destructible. You can destroy a structure to open an alternate route. The AI is described as using those new lanes rather than pathing as if the wall were still standing. That is the design beat Notebookcheck clocked at Gamescom 2026 in the Cody Bonds demo: knock a wall down, walk a different street, and the fight is no longer the rectangle you deployed into.

Cover is a pose, not a shield

Cover in this game is dynamic. Front-rank models kneel. Rear-rank models stand and shoot over them. That is a formation, not an invincibility flag. A wall you are using for cover can be hit — an Ork mega blaster, artillery, anything with enough punch — and shatter into rubble. That rubble can become light cover. The position you paid for can downgrade in the same volley that was meant to keep you alive.

This is the lesson the old Total War brain will fight. You do not park a gunline behind a battlement and forget it. You watch the geometry. When the wall dies, the kneeling rank is suddenly a silhouette. When the rubble remains, you still have light cover — worse than the wall, better than a street. Relocate before the second round of artillery turns that light cover into a crater you did not choose.

Empty buildings can be targeted to deny cover. You do not have to wait for an enemy squad to occupy a hab-block before you spend a gun on it. If Space Marines want that ruin and you would rather they did not have it, you shoot the ruin. Denial is a legal order.

Three kinds of rounds

Weapons are not one interaction with cover. Some rounds are stopped by the wall. Some damage the wall until it is gone. Some penetrate. That split is the targeting skill. A weapon that is stopped by cover is a reason to keep the wall. A weapon that eats the wall is a reason to spend it on the building even if nobody is home. A weapon that penetrates is a reason not to trust the kneeling pose at all.

Do not invent a 2027 armour-penetration chart. Creative Assembly has not published one. Internalise the three behaviours and pick targets as if the wall were a unit with a health bar, because in Warcore it is closer to that than to a static miss chance.

Artillery as landscaping, Stormboyz as ammunition

Artillery — Earthshaker-style pieces are the example that has been used — can crater the ground into trench-like medium cover. That is not only a kill tool. It is a way to leapfrog a gunline across open dirt you would otherwise refuse. You spend the barrage, you occupy the crater, you shoot from medium cover that did not exist at deploy. The same shot that deletes a clump can gift the survivor a hole to kneel in. Aim as if you were cutting a trench, not only as if you were deleting a card.

Stormboyz can become projectiles that damage the environment. Jet packs are not only a movement buff. A green body used as a round is a Havok object. Treat a Stormboy drop as something that can crack the wall you were counting on, not only as a melee threat. The how to beat Orks page already warns you not to blob; this page is why the blob is also a demolition charge.

What Gamescom 2026 actually showed

Notebookcheck’s Gamescom 2026 coverage named Warcore, cluster bombs that ragdoll infantry, and the destroy-a-wall-to-open-an-alternate-route beat in the Cody Bonds demo. That is the cleanest public confirmation that destruction is a pathing tool, not a particle effect. IGN’s Gamescom hands-on added the spectator habits the new engine is built for: pause, zoom into individual Marine–Ork fights, and vault over cover. Vaulting is the infantry answer to a wall that is still standing. Destruction is the answer to a wall you would rather not vault.

Cluster bombs ragdolling infantry is the reminder that bodies are simulated too. A gunline that survives the blast can still be a pile of models that need a second to stand. Do not read a ragdoll as a confirmed kill until the card is gone. Do not stand the second rank in the same blast radius as the first.

How to practise destruction before you have a key

  1. Read the map for walls you will keep and walls you will spend. A keep-wall is stopped-round insurance. A spend-wall is a door you have not opened yet.
  2. Assign at least one gun that can damage cover, not only models. Empty buildings are legal targets.
  3. Expect rubble to become light cover. Plan the fallback before the wall shatters.
  4. Use Earthshaker-style craters as medium-cover stepping stones, not only as a delete button.
  5. Watch Stormboyz as environment damage. The jet pack is a projectile.
  6. Tick cover denial on the army planner the same way you tick sentry mode in ranged combat.
  7. When the wall is gone and the squad is still in the street, that is a morale problem as well as a geometry problem.

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is still in development. Warcore, Havok, kneeling ranks, rubble-as-light-cover, trench-like craters, penetrating rounds, and the Gamescom wall-break are the facts we have. Practise those. Do not invent a cover-save chart CA has not shown. Destroy the building that would save the other side. Leave before they destroy yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.

What is Warcore in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?

Warcore is Creative Assembly's new proprietary engine, unveiled at the Total War 25th Anniversary in December 2025. It replaces Warscape, is console-ready, and is the stack Havok destruction sits on.

Does cover make infantry invincible?

No. Cover is dynamic: the front rank kneels, the rear stands. A wall that is hit can shatter into rubble that becomes light cover. It is a pose, not a shield.

Can I shoot empty buildings to deny cover?

Yes. Buildings can be targeted even when empty. Some weapons stop on cover, some damage it until it dies, some penetrate. Denial is a legal order.

How does artillery change the battlefield?

Earthshaker-style artillery can crater open ground into trench-like medium cover you can leapfrog into. Stormboyz can also become projectiles that damage the environment.

What did Gamescom 2026 show about destruction?

Notebookcheck described Warcore, cluster bombs that ragdoll infantry, and Cody Bonds destroying a wall to open an alternate route. IGN paused and zoomed into Marine–Ork fights and vaulted over cover.
