Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Controls
No official 40k keymap yet. Expected series habits, plus cover, sentry, and strafe.
Creative Assembly has not published a full keymap for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. This hub does not invent exclusive 40k binds and then label them official. It explains the two things a commander actually needs: the camera, group, and tactical-pause patterns every mainline Total War has trained for twenty years, and the new orders the grimdark gun engine requires — cover, sightlines, sentry mode, strafing armour, mixed-weapon targeting, bodyguards, reserves, and bombardment.
Split from here into PC keybinds and console controls. If you still need the battle loop rather than the buttons, start with how to play. If you need a checklist of the orders themselves, use the army planner.
What is actually confirmed about input
Steam lists Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 (app 4199910) with full controller support. Launch platforms are PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. This is the first mainline Total War designed as a DualSense and Xbox-pad game, not a keyboard campaign with a bolted-on overlay. That sentence is a support claim, not a button map. Exact DualSense triggers, Xbox bumpers, and 40k-only keyboard shortcuts have not been published as a complete official chart.
The series firsts around this game — full Japanese voice-over, Creative Assembly’s first 18+ rating — do not change a single bind. The 2027 release year and the closed beta (sign-ups from June 2026, play later in 2026) are when a real keymap is likely to appear in a settings screenshot or a beta options menu. Until then, practise the orders, not a fan-made overlay.
Expected Total War patterns (not 40k exclusives)
If you have finished WARHAMMER III, Shogun, or Three Kingdoms, you already know the skeleton CA is extremely likely to keep:
- A free battle camera: rotate, zoom, elevate, drag-select.
- Control groups so a Cadian gunline, a tank lane, and a Strike Force are not one panicked click.
- Tactical pause or slow-time so you can issue cover and sentry without playing a first-person shooter.
- A unit card bar, ability bar, and minimap.
- Hold-position / attack-move cousins of the old melee language, now pointed at gun lanes.
Those are series expectations, labelled as such. They are not an official Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 manual page. If the beta ships a different pause key or a radial command wheel on pad, this hub will replace the expectation with the screenshot.
New orders the 40k engine actually needs
Preview battles — Alpha Strike, PC Gaming Show coverage, Eurogamer’s Gamescom 2026 hands-on — added jobs a fantasy Total War player never had to bind in muscle memory:
- Take cover / occupy ruins — hab-blocks and battlements are the map. You need an order that puts a blob into geometry, not just next to it.
- Sentry mode — stops a gunline chasing bait. If you cannot find this toggle quickly, you will walk Cadians out of the ruin that kept them alive.
- Strafe and reverse on armour — tanks fire while moving, with accuracy penalties in shown builds. Keyboard players will want strafe keys; pad players will want a camera-relative analog that does not also spin the battlefield.
- Mixed-weapon and per-model targeting — one card is not one gun. You need a way to tell a blob to shoot the Meganobz with krak and the mob with fragments without opening a spreadsheet.
- Bodyguard and warlord protection — heroes do not wander as immortal individuals. Selecting the warlord should not yank the bodyguard off a lane.
- Reserves and bombardment — army-level tools. They belong on a command card or a hotkey row you can hit while paused, not buried in a nested lore menu.
Unlimited simulated ammunition in shown builds is not an input feature. It just means reload is not the bind you should be hunting for.
PC versus pad is a first-class split
Keyboard and mouse remain the historical Total War home, and PC keybinds talks through camera, groups, pause, and the new 40k toggles without fabricating F13-secret-keys. Console controls talks through DualSense, Xbox pads, command cards, and accessibility — and links getting started because pad players are not a second-class campaign audience in this game.
Steam’s current system line is Windows 10 64-bit minimum and Windows 11 recommended, with full CPU and GPU numbers unpublished. That is not a control scheme. It is a reminder not to buy a keypad because a fake spec sheet told you to.
Accessibility and why it belongs here
A gun-density Total War on consoles has to offer more than invert-Y. Expect, as series and platform norms rather than confirmed 40k checkboxes: subtitles for the Japanese and English VO tracks, colour-blind treatment on unit outlines, stick or mouse sensitivity, toggle versus hold for sprint-style camera, and a pause that works on a pad without a missing-keyboard panic. If CA publishes a real accessibility list, it will replace this paragraph. We will not invent a “one-stick sentry” option and call it official.
How to practise input before a keymap exists
Watch a Gamescom or Alpha Strike battle and call the orders out loud: cover, sentry, strafe, split fire, reserves, bombardment, bodyguard. Then pick a race with the faction picker so the orders match a build. Register for the closed beta if you want to be in the room when the real binds appear. Wishlist from the wishlist tool. Until Creative Assembly prints a chart, Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 controls stay a habit list, not a tattoo.
