Ranged Combat in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000
Cover, sightlines, and dakka replace the fantasy melee blob. The Alpha Strike stream is the textbook.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is the first mainline Total War built around guns rather than around a cavalry charge that happens to include archers. Creative Assembly’s 23 July 2026 Alpha Strike livestream ran the same Astra Militarum river-crossing defence against Orks three times from the player’s chair, then paused to explain what the new engine is actually simulating. PC Gamer’s write-up that day remains the cleanest public checklist. This guide turns that checklist into habits you can practise before the closed beta and on launch day.
If you are new to the series, start with how to play. If you already know you will be holding a gunline against a WAAAGH!, jump to how to beat Orks. The army planner is the tick-list version of this page.
Mixed models inside a single unit card
A Guard blob is no longer twenty identical men with one weapon profile. CA showed units that hide a Commissar, a vox operator, and troopers with different guns inside one card. Stats explode because each entity has its own loadout. That matters for target priority: deleting the Commissar is not the same click as deleting the lasgun rank, and a squad that mixed anti-infantry and anti-tank barrels can legally shoot two jobs at once.
The same logic applies to the Astra Militarum roster at large. Kasrkin, Cadians, and weapon teams are not flavour labels. They change what the card does when a Meganob walks into the lane. Build lists as mixed tools, not as stacks of the same icon.
Heroes bring bodyguards, not immortal solos
Fantasy Total War let a legendary lord wander as a one-model army. Here, heroes bring customisable bodyguards. A Commissar or a warlord who strays out of that bubble is a corpse, not a blender. Keep the character inside the escort, and treat the escort as part of the hero’s footprint when you measure cover and sightlines.
That change also kills the old “send the lord to hold a flank forever” opener. Bodyguards die. When they die, the hero is exposed to the same simulated bullets as everyone else.
Per-entity line of fire and simulated projectiles
Line of fire is calculated per model, not per unit disc. One squad can legally shoot two targets if half the models see a mob in the street and the other half see a Deff Dread in the ruin. A visual indicator now shows line of sight when you target, which is the new “are my archers actually shooting” check.
Every projectile is simulated. Tracers, tank rounds, and Baneblade shells occupy space. Cover and ruins are not a percentage roll you forget; they are geometry. A hab-block between the gun and the Ork is the difference between a surviving infantry unit and a pink mist. PC Gamer’s key takeaway after the stream was blunt: positioning is king.
Ammo was unlimited in the builds shown. That does not mean you hold left-click forever. Suppression, morale, and the fact that a moving gunner is a worse gunner still punish spray. Treat unlimited ammo as “no inventory minigame,” not as “accuracy is free.”
Strafing tanks, sweeping fire, and sentry mode
Vehicles can strafe and reverse while firing. A Leman Russ backing off a charging mob keeps its gun in the fight, but CA applied an accuracy penalty to that move. Strafe is a survival tool, not a way to snipe on the sprint.
Some war engines, notably the Baneblade, have sweeping fire: the barrel walks across a line of bodies instead of tunnelling one model. Use it on blobs, not on a single Meganob you could have deleted with a focused shot.
Sentry mode is the new gunline discipline. You mark enemy units to prioritise before they enter range, then the squad stays put instead of chasing a bait unit out of cover. If you have ever watched a Total War archer regiment suicide into cavalry because you forgot to halt, this is the button you wanted. Learn it on the PC keybinds page so the order is in muscle memory, not in a tooltip you read during the charge.
Cover, ruins, and why you do not blob
The Alpha Strike map was a river crossing stuffed with ruins, barricades, and lanes. Infantry can occupy upper storeys. Heavy walkers and Ogryns smash the same cover the Guardsmen need. Do not park a gunline in a clump a single bombardment or a Stompa foot can eat. Overlap fields of fire. Leave a reverse slope. Keep a unit in sentry so the first Ork that crests is already assigned.
Cover can also be destroyed. Havok-backed terrain, Ork trucks, Stompas, and cluster bombs delete the ruin you just occupied — see destructible cover. Flanking still breaks morale; a gunline that holds a wall and then loses the wall still has to pass a morale test.
Orks want you in the open and in melee. Your job as a shooting army is to make the approach expensive. Suppression exists specifically to slow that approach. Apply it before the choppas arrive, not after your front rank is already in the scrum. Backline models can still shoot while the front rank is in melee if they have sight — another per-entity rule that rewards depth instead of a single row.
Reserves, bombardment, and army-level tools
You can deploy reserves at the start or hold them and reinforce later. Space Marines get the flavour version: drop pods and Thunderhawks. Guard get the industrial version: more bodies walking on from the edge, plus airstrikes and Regimental Orders. Those Guard orders, in the stream, only affected troops near command units and voxcasters, which is why the mixed-model vox is not flavour either.
The balance-of-power bar now visualises reinforcements that are still off the field. Do not read it as “I am winning” if half your army is still in orbit. Bombardment is an army ability, not a replacement for a gunline. Soften a blob, then shoot the survivors in cover. Psykers were named on the stream as a unit-ability layer; we will not invent a full psychic phase CA has not shown.
Morale still exists. Damaged units look damaged. Blood is in the game without a paid gore pack — this is CA’s first 18-rated Total War, and the stream treated that as a statement, not a DLC upsell.
How to practise before you have a key
You cannot install the 2027 disc today. You can still drill the language. Open the army planner and tick cover, sentry, mixed weapons, and a reserve plan before you watch another trailer. When the closed beta lands, run the river crossing until refusing a bad melee is automatic.
Ranged combat in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is geometry plus discipline. Mixed models, bodyguards, per-entity sight, simulated bullets, suppression, sweeping fire, and sentry mode are the systems CA chose to show first. Learn those, and the rest of the faction list is just different guns on the same map.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 questions.
Is ammo limited in Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?
In the July 2026 Alpha Strike builds ammo was unlimited. Suppression, accuracy, and cover still matter. That rule can change before 2027.
What is sentry mode?
A gunline order that lets you mark enemies to prioritise before they enter range, so the unit holds instead of chasing bait out of cover.
Do tanks lose accuracy if they fire on the move?
Yes. Strafing and reversing while shooting is allowed, with an accuracy penalty. Use it to survive, not to snipe at full speed.
Is line of fire still one check per unit?
No. Line of fire is per entity. Models in the same squad can shoot different targets if the geometry allows.
Where should I practise these habits?
Use the army planner checklist, then the how-to-beat-Orks guide. The Alpha Strike battle was Guard defending a river against a WAAAGH!
